Abstract

Shell eco Marathon is a competition in which student from all study background is invited to build up a car that able to complete the longest distance in track in minimum fuel consumption. The competition was categorized that defines the system and types of running engine. There are two major categories that is prototype car and urban car concept. Prototype car is a car concept where it must be running in three tires, with a very basic mechanism yet ergonomic to the driver. While in urban car concept, the car is build in four running tire or in other words it similar to the real car system. In this competition, the car invented have to complete the task by travelling the circuit ( Sepang International circuit Kuala Lumpur ) within 20 minutes.

Shell eco Marathon competition does not consider the time to finished the travel but contestant are required to complete the travel with minimum given fuel. This means a lot to the efficiency of the car. The minimum allowed speed is about 30 km/h which approximately equal to 8.3 m/s.

Sem Mechapro team representing Universiti Malaysia Pahang to take part in prototype category. During last participation, the team manage to complete the competition with the others teams from Malaysia with overall achievement ranked at the third place. The best completed distance travelled is 101 km which the best result recorded in MPG as much as 238.

Considering the type of the competition, we care about the total weight of the car. The main part that will contribute to the increment of the weight is the chassis of the car. Thus in this analysis we will focus on the weight of the driver. The chassis configuration must be light enough but developed at high total stiffness or rigidity to avoid deformation that might occur during accidental collision. For safety reason, first we will consider on deflection of the chassis component especially at the concentrated load exerted by the driver. However, considering “if situation”, then we will look at the accidental collision. The roll bar is very important to protect the driver if the car get upside down. In order to develop the car chassis that have high resist to deformation upon load, first we have to study the profile of the chassis that needed to fabricate. For this coming competition, the team has decided to build the ‘space frame chassis” rather than other type of chassis design.

Space frame chassis design is a tubular space frame that employs dozen of circular section tubes which provides the maximum strength and it is positioned in different direction to provide mechanical strength against the force from anywhere. Space frame chassis uses a series of straight tubes and welded together to achieve strength and rigidity with minimal weight. A space frame consist of metal element such as steel or aluminum tubular pipes placed in triangulated format to support the loads from vehicle caused by suspension, engine, driver and aerodynamics effect ( Cristopher,2004). Space frame chassis is chosen considering the low cost of fabrication compared to other type of chassis fabrication such as monocoque. However, before we go to fabrication, we need to understand the principle of how this welded tubular component is working together so that the part will perform at the best result. By performing the simulation in FEMPRO, it is important to know where to draft the connector.

Fundamental principle of a chassis design is that the chassis is designed to achieve rigidity in term of torsional or lateral forces. The concept of supporting frame is by sticking a diagonal element to a rectangular frame to avoid extension of the frame when applying the load. For this competition, we define the main component as the front box, driver compartment and engine compartment.

There is several parameter that are important to take into account. Although the car will run at low speed, the aerodynamic effect contributes to lateral forces coming from the front. The frame has to overcome the load from front, side, rear and from the top ( in case of the car get upside down during accidental collision). The space frame is by nature is are very efficient. Bending moment are transmitted as tension and the pressure load along the length of each tube. Manufacturing of the frame can be done by welding extruded tubes together using conventional method.

Do ensure that your display is interactive and engaging so visitors can see andtouch your vehicle. We will provide you with a table/2 chairs and a power outlet – you’ll need to bring the rest for your display.



This event will be a great platform to showcase your team to the media and key reps from MOSTI, MOHE, Shell and others.

Held in Europe for over 25 years and most recently in the Americas, the Shell Eco-Marathon finally comes to Asia for the first time on last July. On last 7-10 July, young engineer from 81 teams and 10 countries across Asia are gearing up as they take part in SHELL ECO-MARATHON ASIA 2010. Competition that is not based on speed, neither breaking records nor finishing first. This competition, instead, is a race to push the limits of fuel efficiency.



For us, Shell Eco Marathon is one of the best platform- encouraging students like us around the world to design, build, and test fuel-efficient vehicles. In this short period of time, we have learnt how to build a car within the limits of a budget, time and skills. Besides, there are some problems occurred on zhenoxs in the last minute during the event held. Alhamdulillah, almost all major problems have resolved. The key point – we just want to give and show the best to everyone and of course for our university.


As info, It has different classes of competition: fuel cell-powered, solar cell-powered, gasoline-fueled, diesel-fueled, and LPG-fueled. The fuel is strictly measured out for each entrant. At the end of the course, the amount of fuel used is measured; from that figure, fuel economy is calculated. In the Combustion Category (Prototype), Team ATE-1 from Kong Thabbok Upatham Changkol Kho So Tho Bo School have won with the record of 1,521.9 kilometres on a litre of fuel. While in the Fuel Cell Category (Urban Concept), the NUS Urban Concept team from the National University of Singapore using hydrogen fuel was tops with a distance of 612.4 kilometres per litre in their KRUCE 2 concept vehicle.

In gasoline (prototype) class, MECHAPRO’s car : Zhenoxs have won 18th place with the best result- 238 miles on a galon of fuel. Besides, for Malaysia team itself, we actually have won the 3rd place after UTM SEMASIA2 and UTM SEMASIA TEAM. These followed by PISTON 1( Universiti Malaya Mechanical Team) and HORNBILL LIGHTZ TEAM from Curtin University of Technology, Sarawak Campus.

As we already informed,we`ll stay at Universiti Islam Sains Malaysia campus. And here is a brief explanation regarding our movement tonight ( 6 July 2010 ) to Camellia Court, USIM.

But before that, please take note that we will be at Sepang from 7 July till 10 July ( late night ).

Our beloved car, Zhenoxs and Chenta will arrive earlier.Thus,person who incharge to go with lorry`s driver tonight at 8.00 pm please get ready.

Two student required to accompany lorry driver while the rest get into UMP bus ok.


By 11.00 pm,each team mate must be fully prepared. Our team leader,Zaki will inform you later.

A few last tips from the technical team:

· Please ensure that you bring a printed copy of your fuel system diagram and electrical system diagram for the technical inspection

· For hydrogen teams, do bring any documentation on piping/connections to demonstrate that it is hydrogen compatible. Also bring documentation on your fuel cell (stack area, specifications, voltage, power), super capacitors (voltage, power rating). Please bring your flow meter to the hydrogen team (Garage 20) for calibration immediately upon arrival. If you bring your own hydrogen cylinders, these should be surrendered to the hydrogen team too (it’s best not to bring any of your own hydrogen along)

· If your driver is under-weight please bring some ballast

· Please ensure the safety items below:



Critical safety items:

· Please bring the necessary personal protective equipment for your work (gloves, safety glasses, etc)

· Please consider good ventilation and drinking bottle for the driver as it will be very, very hot.

· The roll bar should be a solid immovable roll bar that is strong enough to protect the driver in the event of a roll over. This needs to be 5cm above the driver’s helmet. It should be able stand 70 kgf in any direction.

· There should be no gaps between the bulkhead and the vehicle body/cover.

· Brakes must work well.

· Safety belts must be firmly attached to the vehicle chassis. Often the weakest point is the connection.

· NOTE: Unsafe cars will not be allowed on track



Materials:

· If you are unable to send your car batteries, please advise Mark Devan soonest so that we can try and source this for you in advance.

· Fire extinguishers will be provided for all vehicles.

· Engine oil will be provided for all internal combustion vehicles

· Tubing for fuels will be available in the technical garage

· Fuels will be available in the technical garage



Welding:

· We are trying to have welding equipment on site. If you have any specific welding requirements (e.g. TIG welding), please also advise Mark Devan

Zhenoxs The Newborn Selected Article

When it come to be an engineer, one should think a lot of things. We must broden our maturity to get involve this engineering world.Shell eco Marathon is one of the program which guide the student and give an introduction of being an engineer. All the task must be completed in the given period. Before getting into the scenario, one should ask himself,how much does he or she be prepared to be one of the team members.Because,if we are thinking of starting from a zero,then we should not complain for any difficulties sooner. This is what ones should consider to take the challenge.

Shell eco Marathon is a program that challenge student around the world to build a car that run on minimum fuel consumption while manage to complete the longest distance. There will be 2 categories which is urban and prototype.

Mechapro Team is a team representing Universiti Malaysia Pahang to take the challenge in prototype category. The given name to that prototype is
"Zhenoxs 01". Zhenoxs does not represent any means because it is a solid word that describe our prototype.Insya`Allah, in Allah `s will, there will be another Zhenoxs for upcoming competition.

However, Zhenoxs 01 our first prototype will run on petrol fuels. We welcome you to see the car in our campus. Along with construction of Zhenoxs 01, we did a book entitled "Zhenoxs The NEWBORN" to describe all the process taken throughout the year in completing the car.

Zhenoxs in Harian Metro

We were proud to see our Zhenoxs on Harian Metro yesterday. However, it is quite clumsy when Mechapro Team compared with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. As said by our Team Manager,Mr Ahmad Zaki, Mechapro Team aimed to raise competency among the participants, and not to claim as the winners for it is too early to say so.

Along with this,we hope that it will be easy for us looking for sponsorship.
